Scholarships come in the form of gift aid-money which does not need to be repaid. WVU provides scholarship opportunities to a wide variety of students.

Scholarships are established by individuals or organizations that have taken special interest in promoting student learning and providing financial support for students. Those available solely for eligible students majoring in one of the degree programs in the Division of Forestry & Natural Resources are:

FRESHMAN SCHOLARSHIPS

Hoyt Division of Forestry and Natural Resources Freshman Scholarship

This scholarship is open to any incoming high school freshman with a minimum GPA of 3.50.

WVU Forestry Endowment Fund

This scholarship is given by alumni and friends of the Division of Forestry and Natural Resources to incoming freshmen enrolled in the Division.

Virgil W. & James C. Spitzer Scholarship

The Virgil W. and James C. Spitzer scholarship is a scholarship established by Mrs. Beatrice Spitzer Hovey in memory of her husband and son. It is awarded to a student who plans to enter a career in forestry or conservation. The recipient shall be from the upper one-third of their high school graduating class, be of good character, and must be recommended by their high school principal.

Alan Lindamood Wildlife Management Scholarship

This scholarship shall provide scholarships for West Virginia residents who are students enrolled at WVU as pre-majors or majors in the Wildlife and Fisheries Resources program in the Davis College of Agriculture, Forestry and Consumer Sciences. Recipients shall demonstrate academic promise and financial need and shall not be a recipient of the PROMISE Scholarship. A student who is a recipient one year is eligible for consideration in any other year.

ADDITIONAL SCHOLARSHIPS

Allen W. Goodspeed Forestry Scholarship

The Allen W. Goodspeed Forestry scholarship is given by Mrs. Genevieve C. Goodspeed in memory of her husband who was a professor in the Division of Forestry and Natural Resources from 1949-1971. It is awarded to undergraduate students who are regularly enrolled in the Division of Forestry and Natural Resources. Preference will be given to students identified for aid through the WVU Scholars Program who also meet the requirements for this fund. The recipients shall demonstrate need for financial assistance, have high academic promise as determined by appropriate officials of the Office of Student Financial Aid in consultation with the Division of Forestry and Natural Resources. The recipient will be eligible to maintain the scholarship provided a GPA of 2.75 or higher is maintained at the conclusion of each academic year and s/he is enrolled full-time. The scholarship may be renewable for up to four years of study if the recipient meets all the criteria stated.

Asher W. Kelly Scholarship

The friends and family of Asher W. Kelly provide this scholarship. Asher Kelly was the Assistant State Forester for fire control and retired as a State Forester for the WV State Division of Forestry.

Bartlett Tree Foundation At-Large Scholarship

This scholarship started in the fall semester 2006 and will be available to students in arboriculture/urban forestry who have a genuine interest in a career in arboriculture. The scholarships are available to Foundation supported schools as well as other, two and four year colleges and universities that have programs in arboriculture and/or urban forestry.

Bartlett Tree Foundation, Inc. Grant-In-Aid Scholarship

Up to two undergraduate scholarships will be awarded to promising students majoring in forestry and/or horticulture who have a genuine interest in a career in Arboriculture. Evidence of interest may consist of courses, internships, work experience or special projects in these fields. Sophomores to rising seniors may be considered for this scholarship. The recipients must demonstrate academic achievement, as measured by a minimum 2.75 GPA. A student who is a recipient in one year is eligible for consideration in any succeeding year that funding is available as long as they continue to meet eligibility requirements. Recipients shall be determined by the Scholarship and Awards Committee of the WVU Davis College Division of Forestry and Natural Resources subject to approval by appropriate officials in the WVU Office of Student Financial Aid. Two scholarships of at least $1000.00 will be awarded for a period of one year with half of the award available for the first academic semester. The remainder of the award will be presented for the second academic semester once it has been determined that the recipient continues to maintain the minimum GPA.

Chingos Foundation Scholarship

The Chingos Foundation Scholarship funds a maximum of two undergraduate scholarships or one graduate scholarship for students majoring in Environmental Protection, Wildlife Science or Fisheries Science in the Wildlife and Fisheries Resources program. First consideration shall be given to students in the WVU Scholars Program. Recipients shall demonstrate academic promise by achieving and maintaining a cumulative GPA of 3.00. A recipient of one year is eligible for consideration in any other year.

Christian B. Koch Wood Industries Scholarship

The recipient shall be selected from those candidates enrolled in the wood science and technology program and maintain an active membership with the WVU Chapter of the Forest Products Society. The recipient shall be a full-time student of junior or senior rank and/or a graduate student. The student must demonstrate financial need and have a minimum 3.0 GPA. Recommendations shall be accepted by the Office of Financial Aid yearly and from the Club Advisor.

Eugene Shreve Scholarship

This scholarship is given by the alumni of the Division of Forestry and Natural Resources. Eugene Shreve retired from the Westvaco Corporation and has been instrumental in the success of the WV Forestry Endowment Fund and Alumni Forestry Association.

Forestry Club Scholarship

The recipient must be a member of the Forestry Club to be considered. This scholarship is awarded to the outstanding forestry club member and is chosen by the club’s officers.

George A. Myles Scholarship

This scholarship is provided by the Myles family. George Myles entered WVU as a forestry major in 1939 and was the editor of the forestry yearbook, “The Cruiser” and was awarded the double-bitted ax in his senior year. In 1984, George was presented the Division of Forestry Alumni Association Outstanding Alumnus Award for his significant contributions to the forestry profession and stewardship of our natural resources.

Hamilton Family Award This scholarship is awarded by the family of Dr. John R. Hamilton, Professor Emeritus, in recognition of a multigenerational connection to the Division of Forestry and Natural Resources. From 1964-1987, Dr. Hamilton served as a member of the Wood Science faculty. His son, David, holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Recreation Resources Management, and in 2006 his grandson, Brian, received a Bachelor of Science in Forest Resource Management. The one-year award is given to a rising senior pursuing the Bachelor of Science degree in Wood Science and/or Forest Resource Management.

Herman G. Yeager/Orris D. McCauley Scholarship

Mr. Yeager was a 1950 Forest Resources Management graduate of the Division of Forestry and Natural Resources and a long time forester for the MeadWestvaco Corporation. Mr. McCauley graduated in 1949 from the Forest Resources Management Program in the Division of Forestry and Natural Resources. The Yeager/McCauley scholarships are awarded on an alternate yearly basis.

Howard D. Bennett Scholarship

The Howard D. Bennett scholarship is a scholarship that was established by the Bennett family in memory of Howard Bennett, Executive Director of Appalachian Hardwood Manufacturers Association. The recipient must be in good academic standing and enrolled in the Division of Forestry and Natural Resources.

Howard Phillip Berthy Scholarship

The Howard Berthy Scholarship is given by the Berthy family. Mr. Berthy was a Forestry Extension Specialist in West Virginia. The recipient must be an undergraduate student majoring in Forestry and must demonstrate a satisfactory academic average.

Hoyt Outstanding Transfer Student Scholarship

This scholarship is available to any transfer student enrolling in the Division of Forestry and Natural Resources. The recipient must have a minimum GPA of 3.0.

Kenneth Carvell Scholarship

The Dr. Kenneth Carvell scholarship is provided by Dr. Carvell who is an emeritus professor in the Division of Forestry and Natural Resources and taught from 1953-1988.

MOTAG (Mill Operations Technical Advancement Group) Scholarships, The James A. Holekamp Memorial Scholarship Award, and The Charles S. Gardner Scholarship Award

These scholarships are open to all qualifying students about to enter his/her sophomore year or above at an accredited University in the Southeast or South Central. The major that the students intend to pursue must be in a wood fiber related major. The candidate(s) selected will have earned a 3.0 or better GPA in his/her freshman year, which must be maintained. Should grades be maintained, the scholarship will be considered each year for a total of four (4) years. See attached application. Application deadline is July 1st.

Percival Scholarship

This scholarship is given by alumni and friends of the Division of Forestry and Natural Resources and is awarded to Forest Resources Management students; Dr. W.C. Percival was the Division’s first director from 1935-1966.

SCIF Sables C. J. McElroy Hunting Heritage Scholarship

The Sables Scholarship was established in 2004 by the Safari Club International Foundation Sables and the late C.J. McElroy, to help promote wildlife education. At least one undergraduate scholarship per academic year will be provided in accordance with the following criteria: The recipient must be a United States citizen. First preference will be given to female undergraduate students attending WVU who are in their junior or senior year and are pursuing a course study leading to a B.A. or B.S. degree in the field of wildlife management or wildlife sciences. Recipient must demonstrate financial need as defined by University policies. The recipient must take at least one class that incorporates a positive hunting message as part of its curriculum as determined by the Director of the Division of Forestry and Natural Resources. The recipient must have a 3.0 GPA or better to be eligible for and/or retain a scholarship award. Award recipients are expected to attend one SCI First for Hunters Convention (preferable in their junior year). The SCIF Sables will pay 100% of reasonable and necessary travel and convention attendee expenses for all award recipients.

Thomas G. Clark Scholarship

This scholarship is provided by the Clark family. Thomas Clark entered WVU as a forestry major in 1938 and was one of ten in the 1942 graduating class. In 1985, Tom was presented the Division of Forestry Alumni Association Outstanding Alumnus Award for his significant contributions to the forestry profession and stewardship of our natural resources.

Tilden Norris Scholarship

This scholarship is given in the memory of Tilden Norris by the WVU Forestry Alumni Association Tilden Norris was a graduate of the Division of Forestry and Natural Resources in 1949 and was the Executive Vice-President of Gilman Paper Company. Tilden was also a leader and driving force in the state’s tourism industry.

West Virginia Vegetation Management Scholarships: Dr. Kenneth Carvell Student Award and Roger Latham Memorial Award

Both of these scholarships are open to full-time WVU undergraduate and graduate students majoring in the studies of Forestry or Agriculture. The recipients must be enrolled for the fall semester following the award of the scholarship.

Weyerhaeuser Company Scholarship

This scholarship is open to Wood Science and Technology majors who are enrolled full-time in the program.

WVU Forestry Alumni Scholarship

This scholarship is given by the alumni of the Division of Forestry and Natural Resources.
