Announcement
March 23, 2009
Dear Faculty Senate Chair,
There is an outstanding opportunity this summer for 30 West Virginia teachers to study the interrelationships of economics, the environment, and education — with all expenses paid!
As a Faculty Senate Chair, we would appreciate your help in bringing the course to the attention of your colleagues.
West Virginia University, in cooperation with the State Department of Education and with financial support of several West Virginia forest products firms, will again offer a special summer graduate-level course for teachers. This will be the twentieth year in which the course has been offered and approximately 550 teachers have participated from schools and counties around the State. Those who have taken the course have given it outstanding evaluations.
The course, known as Economics, Environment, and Education in West Virginia, is aimed at enhancing the awareness of business and environmental issues. Three semester credit hours of graduate credit will be awarded to those completing the course.
The financial support of the forest products firms allow us to provide a full scholarship to the selected teachers. Tuition, room, board, books, and field trip travel expenses are covered. (Participants must only provide their own travel from home to Canaan Valley). Upon acceptance, a $100 deposit is required from each participant to hold their slot for the workshop. The deposit will be returned to the participant upon completion of the course.
Teachers who are selected are asked to make a commitment to attend the class in its entirety. The first session will be at Canaan Valley Resort from July 19 through July 24, 2009. The second, wrap-up session will be a Friday evening-Saturday morning meeting on November 6 and 7, 2009 at Canaan Valley Resort.
Would you help by announcing and/or circulating this information to your colleagues? Teachers may be from any instructional area that is implemented in your school system. Teachers from special education, biology, foreign languages, kindergarten, science, math, art, and music — to name a few subjects — have attended the class.
Teachers who wish to apply should complete the brief application form (attached) and return to this address no later than April 30, 2009. Additional copies of the application may be photocopied, if needed. Teachers may also register on line at http://www.forestry.caf.wvu.edu/ .
