The Forest Products
Society
WVU Student Chapter
The WVU Student Chapter of the Forest
Products Society (FPS) is the student club for Wood Science
and Technology or other interested
students. FPS is a international
society of professionals in the wood
products industry, government agencies,
and universities.
Activities
The West Virginia University
Student Chapter of FPS conducted a project
in December 2004 to collect donations to
send holiday packages to the Morgantown-based
Battery B, 201st Field Artillery of the West
Virginia National Guard currently deployed
in Iraq. The project was inspired by
the fact that Charles J. Stemple, the 2003
Outstanding Senior in WVU's Wood Science
and Technology program, is a sergeant with
the 201st. The Student Chapter collected
and shipped four cartons of magazines, paperbacks,
toiletries, food, and other items to the
soldiers. The project was organized
by chapter president Matt Rowles, and chapter
members Jimmy King and Loren Bradley. King
and Bradley are also members of the National
Guard.

The chapter sponsors an annual "Oustanding
Educator Award" for the Division
of Forestry. Nominations and selection of
the recipient is conducted by the Division's
student organizations. The winner in 2005 was Dr. Steve Selin. Past
winners include Dr. Theresa Goldman, Prof.
Tony Tomkowski, Dr. Ray Hicks, Dr. John
Brooks and Ben Dawson-Andoh.
The student chapter created and donated funds for the C.B. Koch Wood Science
and Technology Scholarship . The chapter
is renewing efforts to increase the endowment
for the Koch Scholarship.
The chapter has participated in the national timber bridge design competition
winning honors several times in the 1990s
and renewed its participation in 2004.
| The student chapter constructs
various woodworking projects
for the benefit of the Division
of Forestry and the Wood Science
and Technology program, including
a yellow-poplar bench for the
hallway in Percival Hall and
a coffee table constructed of
parallel strand lumber donated
by Trus Joist MacMillan and other
projects which were auctioned
at the 1999 Division of Forestry
banquet. FPS is responsible for
organizing a group advising session
for Wood Science and Technology
students during each semester's
registration period. Although
all four bachelor's degree programs
in the Division of Forestry hold
group advising, the Wood Science
and Technology advising session
is the only one initiated and
organized by students. The chapter
is very active in Division of
Forestry activities, including
our Division yearbook, The Cruiser,
and the annual Division banquet
and alumni weekend. The Chapter
also participates in WVU's "Majors
Information Day," which provides
an opportunity for students to
investigate all of the various
majors available on campus. To
our knowledge, it is the only
student organization on campus
to work with faculty in Majors
Information Day. FPS is a great
way to meet Wood Science and
Technology professors and other
Wood Science and Technology students. |
